History and Mission

The mission of the Faith Libraries of Northern Colorado is to serve as a community of mutual support, encouragement, and sharing for our partner libraries and to use all our resources to bring about a deeper understanding of our respective faiths, both in the lives of our congregations and in the lives of all those whom we might reach through the gifts entrusted to us.

The Faith Libraries of Northern Colorado (FLNC) is an ecumenical network of church libraries in Fort Collins. The network began as an outgrowth of plans formulated in 2008 at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) to develop a regional resource for providing access to books and other media for the greater faith community of Northern Colorado. In June 2009 the libraries at two other Fort Collins churches joined FUMC in forming the initial network: Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and Blessed John XXIII University Parish. Four new partners from Fort Collins have since joined the network: the libraries at Christ Center Community Church in April 2010, at American Baptist Church in April 2011, at First Presbyterian Church in September 2014, and at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in September 2015.

Although Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church ceased to be an active network participant in 2014, FLNC continues to maintain a working relationship with its library, as it does with the library at the Congregation Har Shalom Center for Jewish Living. And in April 2014, when Pope Francis canonized Pope John XXIII, the FLNC partner church named in his honor became Saint John XXIII Catholic Church.

FLNC began to sponsor events of mutual interest in February 2010. Since then, through 2015, it has sponsored two faith library seminars, two workshops for area faith librarians, and four faith literature BookTalks in which the participants share information about books they have found particularly meaningful. In addition, the FLNC has hosted eight events in a Faith Literature Authors and Speakers Series that began in August 2011. A list of featured guest speakers and their topics may be found under Network-Sponsored Events

In 2010 FLNC network also began an annual circulation of featured books from its partner libraries. Each fall the collection travels from church to church on successive Sundays each fall.

FLNC received national attention in the September 2011 issue of Catholic Library World, the journal of the Catholic Library Association ( Click here to view this article, which gives a more complete history of FLNC's formation, operations and early growth.
